Move from mainpage to User:Deacosta | Last Edit | mature artist page | MONOSKOP

Revision as of 21:06, 10 July 2026 by Deacosta (talk | contribs) As published in Monoskop By the time of my last edit in the span of 14 years, the page was mature, well edited and had everything an artist page should have. Reactivated only when the exhibit Elements of Experience happened to reflect current and pass work more diligently, it was moved from mainpage to user:deacosta - as Monoskop policies on editing pages have changed over the years. Pictures were removed and paged moved to sandbox. Where it remains alive but obscured. A definitive loss for Monoskop. .............. Alexander Acosta Osorio Artist born in Bogotá, Colombia. Alexander is a visual artist who works primarily with digital multimedia in the forms of digital photography, video, interventions, online publications and exhibitions. Alexander graduated in Journalism and Mass Communication from the American University in Bulgaria and Fine Arts from LaGuardia Community College at The City University of New York. He collaborated with the educational programs at the Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum, becoming an intern at PS1 MoMA Contemporary Art Center and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. After working with these art institutions Alexander had further apprenticeship training at Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery and Thomas & Associates, where he supported several art shows and did installation work for several high-end exhibitors such as PHILLIPS auction house, The Armory Show New York, Ana Tzarev Gallery, Art Basel New York, and Frith Street Gallery. For Alexander learning means doing. 2003 - 2009 New York City | Alexander was exposed to a wealth of art influences from some of the most recognized artists of our time that helped him develop a range of work that led to his current focus on photography. In his images Alexander explores the relationships of his subjects with their immediate surroundings. He is interested in how these relationships change the way we perceive ourselves and how they change the way we look at things. 2009 - Present Bulgaria | Alexander moved to Bulgaria to pursue journalism and photo-journalism. This would be the starting point of a new phase in his photography exploration that continues to this day. "When I first came to Bulgaria I was amused by this often neglected but emblematic country. Living here and experiencing Bulgaria first-hand has helped me to see beyond the surface and visually capture the real Bulgaria. I record life as it’s presented to me and it is a never-ending discovering process." To date, Alexander has had a couple of exhibitions in Bulgaria, the first at the Balkansky Academic Center at the American University in Bulgaria - AUBG( 2010) and at Sofia Arsenal - Museum for Contemporary Art ( 2011) as part of the European Photography month. After a few years of good living, Alexander is back to explore some more. CURRENT EXHIBITIONS: ELEMENTS OF EXPERIENCE: Espace Port A, Sofia | 20-30 of June, 2026. Revision as of 22:32, 28 March 2011 by Deacosta (talk | contribs) As originally published in Monoskop Educational institutions are incubators of social change by creating concerned, involved citizens. By educating me about social ills, every school I have been a part of has strengthened in me the belief that social engagement should be every educated individual's responsibility. This is especially important nowadays when injustice, indifference and consumerism are rampant, driving humanity towards decadence and crisis. It is only by taking an active stand that I can aspire to participate and contribute to the betterment of the society I live in. I believe this is a time of change, a time of many challenges, and a turning point for humanity. The financial crisis is in full swing; global warming keeps changing the world every day, and poverty has reached its highest point in recent history. We are faced with various wars and unrest around the world. And it is only by turning as many people as we can to social action that we can hope to turn things around. I look forward to being part of that change. I studied International Business in Colombia, looking to expand my horizons and see the world from a global perspective. The core of the program was interdisciplinary, focused on entrepreneurship in an international environment which responds to the growing necessity for Colombia to be a positive player in the international arena. I was trained to be a creator and promoter of ideas in the public and private sectors. Later on, living and studying in New York was a life-changing experience for me personally and professionally. American education, with its mixed emphasis on pragmatism and social responsibility, had a huge impact on me. I discovered that an entrepreneurial instinct had endless possibilities in the social and art spheres. During my studies in New York I had the opportunity to discover my interests and my love for the arts. My volunteer work taught me that art is a powerful tool for bringing about social change. Revision as of 22:24, 28 March 2011 by Deacosta (talk | contribs) (Created page with... Orignally published in Monoskop “ Every year during the month of March a family of ragged gypsies would set up their tents near the village, and with a great uproar of pipes and kettledrums they would display new inventions. First they brought the magnet. A heavy gypsy with untamed bear and sparrow hands, who introduced himself as Melquíades, put on a bold public demonstration of what he himself called the eight wonder of the learned alchemists of Macedonia. He went from house to house dragging two metal ingots and everybody was amazed to see pots, pans, tongs, and braziers tumble down from their places and beams creak from the desperation of nails and screws trying to emerge, and even objects that had been lost for a long time appeared from where they had been searched for most and went dragging along in turbulent confusion behind Melquíades' magical irons. "Things have life of their own,"the gypsy proclaimed with a harsh accent."it's simply a matter of waking up their souls." By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Revision as of 16:53, 10 May 2007 by Deacosta (talk | contribs) Originally published in Monoskop My name is Alexander Acosta Osorio, a Colombian by birth and a New Yorker by persuasion. For the past three years, I have been exploring the limitless offerings of New York, an experience that has been at once useful and satisfying on both a personal and a professional level. I am pursuing a Fine Arts degree at LaGuardia Community College in addition to free-lancing as a photographer and volunteering in an art workshop at the Museum of Modern Art. In these weekly workshops, I provide support to guest art educators, as a result of which I have gained a meaningful insight into the different social uses of art. In visual art, I found a meaningful vent for emotions and thoughts that being away from my country of birth brought about and a great medium through which I could recount and relive salient moments of my new life. I have been exploring the relationships we have with the objects that surround us and with the situations we find ourselves in every day. I am interested in how these relationships change the way we perceive ourselves, and consequently, the way we look at things. I started my exploration of art with photography, drawing, and collage here in New York. My photography captures different aspects of contemporary metropolitan life. That said, it is not just urban. I would like to think of it as universal in being capable of speaking to schooled and unschooled, to city- and country-dwellers alike. In my work, I have tried to encourage people to think and re-assess the obvious: what we all see but never linger upon. I have tried to tell stories public and private. I have attempted to explore knowledge both formal and informal. I want to interpret visually that tingling de ja vu sensation we get every day immerse in routine. I want to reflect the feeling of the ordinary and the unique; inhaling the aroma of freshly brewed coffee coming from the coffee-shop around the corner or hearing the same persistent don't miss our lunch special of the Italian joint's barker. In my work, that feeling of the always growing city and the melancholy of present and gladly remembered past times,is always welcomed. Today, I seek to pursue a degree in Fine Arts because I am looking to re-invent myself in a new and exciting direction, live new experiences and find new paths to follow. My goal is, broadly speaking, to become a complete individual as well as a better artist. What this means is that I seek to expand my awareness of human nature, as well as my knowledge and vision of the world. I want to branch out and diversify the media I use in order to be able to develop my own visual language through which I can communicate this reality of ours in a coherent and meaningful form. I believe that my artistic experience will be greatly enriched by changing the cultural setting in which my baptism in the arts took place.which means that i want to travel alot! Culture is the basic material of my art, my laboratory, and the reason of my endeavors. Culture to me, is a live organism which in its own merit deserves to be exposed. In my work, I intend to communicate and express ideas and thoughts to generate provocative personal feelings and social awareness of what we are as individuals, and how the way we live today in society morphs constantly. I believe that my artistic experience and craft will greatly be enriched by pursuing mayor studies and traveling.I would like to continue this artistic exploration in order to achieve satisfactory results.

THERE IS AN IDEOLOGICAL CONSPIRACY BETWEEN SOCIETY AND ART,(INCLUDING ART PROFFESSIONALS)NOW ART ART HAS BECOME NULL AS MAYOR ART INSTITUTIONS ARE MORE CONCERNED IN RUNNING THEMSELVES AS TURISTIC ATTRACTIONS TO REALLY BOTHER WITH ART OR WITH WHAT IT MEANS.ART HAS BECOME JUST ANOTHER FORM OF BUSINESS. SOME BELIEVE ART IS NULL,AS THE CONSPIRACY OF ART STATES: "ART HAS COMPLETED ITS CICLE,ITS SIMULATION AS ANDY WARHOL WAS THE GREATEST SIMULATOR,BECAUSE IN SIMULATION THERE'S A CHALLANGE,A PROVOCATION. JEAN BAUDRILLARD ART HAS BECOME SOMETHING ELSE...ANDY HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT, HE'S JUST A STEREOTYPE,AN ICON FAR BIGGER THAN REALITY.BUT THE POINT HAS BEEN MADE.ART HAS REACHED ITS POINT OF NO RETURN, IT HAS TO CHANGE,BUT TO DO IT IS NECESSARY TO LOOK AT SOCIETY ITSELF.UNFORTUNATELY , IT IS TOO BUSY SPECULATING ABOUT POLITICS AND BORDERS... what happens today in the center or the art scene: "here was one artist on the panel. She said. "let's talk about gender, let's talk about New York vs. Brooklyn, or about money and the commericial galleries." The curators ignored her. One man from the audience stood up and called them dictators. They laughed and ignored him. The last woman stood up and brought up the point that over half of the MFA's earned today are women, but less than 20% of the solo shows in Chelsea last year were women. They ignored her too" AND IT ALSO HAPPENS IN EUROPE.... BUT THE QUESTION IS: WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Elements of Experience | Press Release

Elements of Experience | Espace PORT.A 22-30 June, 2026 (click on the title to see the exhibition) . In the contemporary landscape, where sensory overload masks the structural foundations of our reality, Elements of Experience invites viewers to pause and reflect on the fundamental architecture of artistic expression. This exhibition brings together two distinct voices—Julien Pelloux and Alexander Acosta Osorio—to explore how art can serve as a primary conduit for human perception and memory. Elements of Experience is a meditation on the nature of the artistic experience, a profound emotional, intellectual, and sensory process that evokes personal meaning, deep resonance, and new perspectives. Through painting, installation, and photography, the artists employ minimal forms and distinctive compositions to strip away narrative distractions, revealing the ways in which we understand space, culture, and identity. . For this exhibition Julien brings a rigorous approach to geometric abstraction. Drawing on mathematical progressions and Albers's color theories, his work creates a vibrant tension between control and spontaneity. His clean forms are not merely static shapes but rhythmic perceptions that generate an "illusion of expansion," turning the canvas into a breathing, inhabited silence inspired by Japanese aesthetics. He uses acrylic, moving from a geometric rigor achieved with masking tape to a more gestural, embodied and intuitive painting, worked directly with the brush in vibrant layers. His works convey a poetic tension between structure and spontaneity, inviting us to feel a vital breath, a subtle balance between control and freedom, magnified by the inspiring echo of Japanese culture and its inhabited silences. . Julien Pelloux is from France, he grew up between Bordeaux and Paris and trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Julien has exhibited his work at Paris La Generale, Jean Collet Gallery, Saint Denis, Cretail Gag, and Pantin among others. Julien is also a textiles and installations expert working for American artist Sheila Hicks at Frank Elbaz Gallery. His expertise involves the realization of complex, three-dimensional installations frequently exhibited by the gallery in Paris and internationally. This is Julien’s first visit to Bulgaria. . Alexander Acosta Osorio is originally from Colombia and grew up in Bogota. His first formal job was at Glacier National Park in Montana, later moving to New York City for a few years where he decided to pursue an art education, where he was mentored by American artist Betty Tompkins, Art historian and critic Lawrence Waldron, American Photographer Scott Sternbach, and American painter Dennis D'Amelio, among others. Alexander quickly got involved in the local art scene and participated in a variety of group exhibitions. For Alexander learning means doing. . In New York, Alexander was exposed to a wealth of art influences and experiences that helped him develop a range of work in drawing and painting, leading up to his focus in photography. In his images Alexander explores the relationship of his subjects with their immediate surroundings; in them contemplative moments transform into memories, self-expression, and understanding of the human experience. Alexander is interested in how these relationships transform the way we perceive ourselves and how they change the way we look at things. . Alexander also has collaborated with educational programs at the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, becoming an intern at PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in its film and video center. After working with these art institutions Alexander had further apprenticeship training at Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, and Thomas & Associates. As a freelance art handler Alexander carried out art installation work for renowned art fairs and galleries such as Phillips Auction, Art Basel, The Armory Show, Ana Tzarev Gallery, Frith Street Gallery. . For this exhibition Alexander has taken the experiences lived in the United States, Bulgaria and Europe and combined them in a visual narrative of time, color, and perspective. Each image and composition represents a period of his life and the places he has visited. The combination of images read as a dream-like passage rich with textures, personal expression, and emotion. . Each work can stand rightly on its own but for Alexander they also can be more powerful as a single unity, as one experience. . Alexander traveled the United States extensively mostly by train before moving to Bulgaria. He has lived in Sofia for the last fourteen years where he is raising his son. He travels around Bulgaria and Europe at least once a year.
