Never erase a photograph!!Nunca Borres una fotografia!!

( To feed your cultural curiosity and access culturosity.com click on the title)

Seriously. More of then than not we undervalue the importance of a photograph; any photograph.

Look again.

Often we discard those images we don’t find appealing just because our digital cameras allow us to do so. I like photography, I do it too. I am not saint. But I think about it before pulling the trigger. I exhaust all possible angles, crops, colors, compositions. I think about their importance, and what they mean to me. I try, for the most part, to treat them with respect.

Some argue that digital cameras give users versatility, others that it makes them more careless. Most think, if the care at all, that it is ok to just erase that unique moment in time: the perfect light, the perfect angle, the perfect mood, thinking that maybe you can ‘take them again’ some other time.

Wrong.

It is possible to take thousands of photographs, yes, but they all will not be the same.

You never get a photo opportunity back.

A photograph does not have to be beautiful to be worth it; unique.

Think about it.

Yes, a lot of people prefer the cliché this-make-me-look-good kind of photograph, but there’s so much more in a photograph than infamous egocentric superficiality.
A photograph has an intrinsic value. It is fraction of time: a window to a moment in the past.

To me, an erased photograph is a forgotten moment, a discarded feeling, a wasted piece of existence; a memory lost.

And what are we without our memories?

What does a photograph mean to you? memories? Or just images?
Is it visual tool to tell a story and to communicate? Or just an instrument for social interaction?...

Do you value your memories? If so, ask yourself these questions, and think twice before erasing those photographs. Someone may care about them, after all they are priceless:they are yours.

Yes, a photograph can also be good or can be bad- but what makes a photograph good or bad?

In Culturosity.com, a website dedicated to open minds and broaden perspectives about multiculturalism in main stream society, I found a very helpful explanation and chart with the positive and negatives effects of photography.

" The Power of Photography
by Kate Berardo

We photo enthusiasts can easily ramble off some of the benefits of photography—from capturing memories to giving us visual records of our travels. But we seldom think about the negative power of photography—from skewing reality to being invasive and offensive. When taking photos across cultures, it is important to be aware of both the positive and negative powers of photography.

Photography Can..But It Can Also…

Delight people..or offend people

Capture the essence and character of different cultures. Or capture only the exotic in different cultures.

Help us to see elements of a culture that we might otherwise miss.Or confirm our biases about cultures by capturing elements that fits our stereotypes and assumptions.

Be a communication tool between people of different cultures. Or be an invasive instrument that cuts short the possibility of connecting with people from other cultures.

Create entry points into different cultures—allowing you to experience the culture more richly and deeply. Or create an unsurpassable barrier between you and the culture you are experiencing—if inappropriately used.

Honor other culture’s values and practices when we portray photos and describe their contents in a respectful, culturally sensitive fashion. Or debase other culture’s values or practices if we portray photos in a way that disrespects or looks down on the traditions and customs of other cultures."

True. All depends on how you look at it.

Then, what makes a photo great? There are many standards.

In conscientious you'll find an answer- here:
http://jmcolberg.com/weblog/2007/03/what_makes_a_great_photo/

Remember:There is more in a photograph than what meets the eye.

Think about the value of an image before taking a photograph or clicking that erase button again. Who knows, someone someday will thank you for keeping those moments, your moments, alive.
Please.

Yo no soy santo.

A fantastic short story/Un cuento corto fantastico

(Click on title for a complete summary and analysis at bookrags.com)

One of My favourite Spanish short stories.Fantastic.

“The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World”
by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The first children who saw the dark and slinky bulge approaching through the sea let themselves think it was an enemy ship. Then they saw it had no flags or masts and they thought it was a whale. But when it washed up on the beach, they removed the clumps of seaweed, the jellyfish tentacles, and the remains of fish and flotsam, and only then did they see that it was a drowned man.

They had been playing with him all afternoon, burying him in the sand and digging him up again, when someone chanced to see them and spread the alarm in the village. The men who carried him to the nearest house noticed that he weighed more than any dead man they had ever known, almost as much as a horse, and they said to each other that maybe he'd been floating too long and the water had got into his bones. When they laid him on the floor they said he'd been taller than all other men because there was barely enough room for him in the house, but they thought that maybe the ability to keep on growing after death was part of the nature of certain drowned men. He had the smell of the sea about him and only his shape gave one to suppose that it was the corpse of a human being, because the skin was covered with a crust of mud and scales.

They did not even have to clean off his face to know that the dead man was a stranger. The village was made up of only twenty-odd wooden houses that had stone courtyards with no flowers and which were spread about on the end of a desertlike cape. There was so little land that mothers always went about with the fear that the wind would carry off their children and the few dead that the years had caused among them had to be thrown off the cliffs. But the sea was calm and bountiful and all the men fitted into seven boats. So when they found the drowned man they simply had to look at one another to see that they were all there.

That night they did not go out to work at sea. While the men went to find out if anyone was missing in neighboring villages, the women stayed behind to care for the drowned man. They took the mud off with grass swabs, they removed the underwater stones entangled in his hair, and they scraped the crust off with tools used for scaling fish. As they were doing that they noticed that the vegetation on him came from faraway oceans and deep water and that his clothes were in tatters, as if he had sailed through labyrinths of coral. They noticed too that he bore his death with pride, for he did not have the lonely look of other drowned men who came out of the sea or that haggard, needy look of men who drowned in rivers. But only when they finished cleaning him off did they become aware of the kind of man he was and it left them breathless. Not only was he the tallest, strongest, most virile, and best built man they had ever seen, but even though they were looking at him there was no room for him in their imagination.

They could not find a bed in the village large enough to lay him on nor was there a table solid enough to use for his wake. The tallest men's holiday pants would not fit him, nor the fattest ones' Sunday shirts, nor the shoes of the one with the biggest feet. Fascinated by his huge size and his beauty, the women then decided to make him some pants from a large piece of sail and a shirt from some bridal linen so that he could continue through his death with dignity. As they sewed, sitting in a circle and gazing at the corpse between stitches, it seemed to them that the wind had never been so steady nor the sea so restless as on that night and they supposed that the change had something to do with the dead man. They thought that if that magnificent man had lived in the village, his house would have had the widest doors, the highest ceiling, and the strongest floor, his bedstead would have been made from a midship frame held together by iron bolts, and his wife would have been the happiest woman. They thought that he would have had so much authority that he could have drawn fish out of the sea simply by calling their names and that he would have put so much work into his land that springs would have burst forth from among the rocks so that he would have been able to plant flowers on the cliffs. They secretly compared hom to their own men, thinking that for all their lives theirs were incapable of doing what he could do in one night, and they ended up dismissing them deep in their hearts as the weakest, meanest and most useless creatures on earth. They were wandering through that maze of fantasy when the oldest woman, who as the oldest had looked upon the drowned man with more compassion than passion, sighed:

'He has the face of someone called Esteban.'

It was true. Most of them had only to take another look at him to see that he could not have any other name. The more stubborn among them, who were the youngest, still lived for a few hours with the illusion that when they put his clothes on and he lay among the flowers in patent leather shoes his name might be Lautaro. But it was a vain illusion. There had not been enough canvas, the poorly cut and worse sewn pants were too tight, and the hidden strength of his heart popped the buttons on his shirt. After midnight the whistling of the wind died down and the sea fell into its Wednesday drowsiness. The silence put an end to any last doubts: he was Esteban. The women who had dressed him, who had combed his hair, had cut his nails and shaved him were unable to hold back a shudder of pity when they had to resign themselves to his being dragged along the ground. It was then that they understood how unhappy he must have been with that huge body since it bothered him even after death. They could see him in life, condemned to going through doors sideways, cracking his head on crossbeams, remaining on his feet during visits, not knowing what to do with his soft, pink, sea lion hands while the lady of the house looked for her most resistant chair and begged him, frightened to death, sit here, Esteban, please, and he, leaning against the wall, smiling, don't bother, ma'am, I'm fine where I am, his heels raw and his back roasted from having done the same thing so many times whenever he paid a visit, don't bother, ma'am, I'm fine where I am, just to avoid the embarrassment of breaking up the chair, and never knowing perhaps that the ones who said don't go, Esteban, at least wait till the coffee's ready, were the ones who later on would whisper the big boob finally left, how nice, the handsome fool has gone. That was what the women were thinking beside the body a little before dawn. Later, when they covered his face with a handkerchief so that the light would not bother him, he looked so forever dead, so defenseless, so much like their men that the first furrows of tears opened in their hearts. It was one of the younger ones who began the weeping. The others, coming to, went from sighs to wails, and the more they sobbed the more they felt like weeping, because the drowned man was becoming all the more Esteban for them, and so they wept so much, for he was the more destitute, most peaceful, and most obliging man on earth, poor Esteban. So when the men returned with the news that the drowned man was not from the neighboring villages either, the women felt an opening of jubilation in the midst of their tears.

'Praise the Lord,' they sighed, 'he's ours!'

The men thought the fuss was only womanish frivolity. Fatigued because of the difficult nighttime inquiries, all they wanted was to get rid of the bother of the newcomer once and for all before the sun grew strong on that arid, windless day. They improvised a litter with the remains of foremasts and gaffs, tying it together with rigging so that it would bear the weight of the body until they reached the cliffs. They wanted to tie the anchor from a cargo ship to him so that he would sink easily into the deepest waves, where fish are blind and divers die of nostalgia, and bad currents would not bring him back to shore, as had happened with other bodies. But the more they hurried, the more the women thought of ways to waste time. They walked about like startled hens, pecking with the sea charms on their breasts, some interfering on one side to put a scapular of the good wind on the drowned man, some on the other side to put a wrist compass on him , and after a great deal of get away from there, woman, stay out of the way, look, you almost made me fall on top of the dead man, the men began to feel mistrust in their livers and started grumbling about why so many main-altar decorations for a stranger, because no matter how many nails and holy-water jars he had on him, the sharks would chew him all the same, but the women kept piling on their junk relics, running back and forth, stumbling, while they released in sighs what they did not in tears, so that the men finally exploded with since when has there ever been such a fuss over a drifting corpse, a drowned nobody, a piece of cold Wednesday meat. One of the women, mortified by so much lack of care, then removed the handkerchief from the dead man's face and the men were left breathless too.

He was Esteban. It was not necessary to repeat it for them to recognize him. If they had been told Sir Walter Raleigh, even they might have been impressed with his gringo accent, the macaw on his shoulder, his cannibal-killing blunderbuss, but there could be only one Esteban in the world and there he was, stretched out like a sperm whale, shoeless, wearing the pants of an undersized child, and with those stony nails that had to be cut with a knife. They only had to take the handkerchief off his face to see that he was ashamed, that it was not his fault that he was so big or so heavy or so handsome, and if he had known that this was going to happen, he would have looked for a more discreet place to drown in, seriously, I even would have tied the anchor off a galleon around my nick and staggered off a cliff like someone who doesn't like things in order not to be upsetting people now with this Wednesday dead body, as you people say, in order not to be bothering anyone with this filthy piece of cold meat that doesn't have anything to do with me. There was so much truth in his manner taht even the most mistrustful men, the ones who felt the bitterness of endless nights at sea fearing that their women would tire of dreaming about them and begin to dream of drowned men, even they and others who were harder still shuddered in the marrow of their bones at Esteban's sincerity.

That was how they came to hold the most splendid funeral they could ever conceive of for an abandoned drowned man. Some women who had gone to get flowers in the neighboring villages returned with other women who could not believe what they had been told, and those women went back for more flowers when they saw the dead man, and they brought more and more until there were so many flowers and so many people that it was hard to walk about. At the final moment it pained them to return him to the waters as an orphan and they chose a father and mother from among the best people, and aunts and uncles and cousins, so that through him all the inhabitants of the village became kinsmen. Some sailors who heard the weeping from a distance went off course and people heard of one who had himself tied to the mainmast, remembering ancient fables about sirens. While they fought for the privilege of carrying him on their shoulders along the steep escarpment by the cliffs, men and women became aware for the first time of the desolation of their streets, the dryness of their courtyards, the narrowness of their dreams as they faced the splendor and beauty of their drowned man. They let him go without an anchor so that he could come back if he wished and whenever he wished, and they all held their breath for the fraction of centuries the body took to fall into the abyss. They did not need to look at one another to realize that they were no longer all present, that they would never be. But they also knew that everything would be different from then on, that their houses would have wider doors, higher ceilings, and stronger floors so that Esteban's memory could go everywhere without bumping into beams and so that no one in the future would dare whisper the big boob finally died, too bad, the handsome fool has finally died, because they were going to paint their house fronts gay colors to make Esteban's memory eternal and they were going to break their backs digging for springs among the stones and planting flowers on the cliffs so that in future years at dawn the passengers on great liners would awaken, suffocated by the smell of gardens on the high seas, and the captain would have to come down from the bridge in his dress uniform, with his astrolabe, his pole star, and his row of war medals and, pointing to the promontory of roses on the horizon, he would say in fourteen languages, look there, where the wind is so peaceful now that it's gone to sleep beneath the beds, over there, where the sun's so bright that the sunflowers don't know which way to turn, yes, over there, that's Esteban's village.

Una de mis historias cortas favoritas. Fantastica.

Over development, populist politics and unscrupulous private interest are extinguishing the planet's natural reserves all over the world, and in Bulgaria the Seven Rila Lakes in the Rila National Park are being victim of this unfortunate trend.

I recently visited the Rila lakes, and even though it was snowing the day I climbed up there, I still remember vividly the tremendous impact the Rila Lakes had on me. It didn’t matter that I had been climbing for an hour uphill. The Lakes were gorgeous. I have never seen something like it. I have been to St. Mary in Glacier National Park in Montana, the home of the grizzly bears and the black feet nation. The nature there is still pristine, and there are thousands of hikes and lakes. It is a unique place. That image remained in me until I visited the Rila Lakes, in Rila National Park, which did raise the bar. The mountain picks of the Rila reminded me of those of the Andes, and those back home in Colombia; unique in their own right.

The environmental policies of Bulgaria have been criticized by various environmental groups. If you google ‘deforestation in Bulgaria’ you will find tons of articles about this unfortunate business for nature.

In maps of the world.com (http://www.mapsofworld.com/bulgaria/environment.html) you can find a mention of the negative effects of deforestation and pollution in Bulgaria. Industrialization has its down side.

“With the constant rise in the number of industries in the country, the environment of Bulgaria is getting more and more affected by air pollution. Human activities like deforestation, industrial activities etc are resulting in environmental hazards in Bulgaria. Today, air pollution is a major environmental issues in the country. The environment of Bulgaria is thus witnessing a constant deterioration.

Large scale industrial development in Bulgaria is causing industrial emissions, deforestation, soil pollution and water pollution. All these various kinds of pollutions is having a negative effect on the Bulgarian environment which is presently in a poor state. Rivers are getting contaminated from the sewage, detergents and heavy metals.

Forests, which comprise an integral aspect of environment in Bulgaria, are getting affected by deforestation and air pollution created by the occurrences of acid rain. Soil pollution is taking place due to contamination of soil from industrial by-products and from the heavy metals that are produced by the metallurgical plants.

To deal with rising environmental problems in Bulgaria, the country has entered into various international environmental agreements like Air Pollution-Sulfur 85, Antarctic Treaty, Kyoto Protocol, Ozone Layer Protection etc. Bulgaria is therefore making efforts to create a healthy and green environment with little air and other kinds”

Fortunately, nature in Bulgaria is not alone. The Facebook advocacy group “Save the Seven Lakes of Rila Mountain, Bulgaria” is an example of how people are reacting against these abuses to nature.

Here is what they have to say:

The Rila Mountains are home to one of the largest National Parks in Europe. It is a safeguarded place for national and world treasures – undisturbed wilderness, wild animals, and rare plants. People, for centuries, have lived in relative harmony with nature in the foothills of the mountains. That is, until recently. Now, the area is rapidly changing with the arrival of offshore companies that plan to invest millions of Euros in large-scale ski-resorts ON THE TERRITORY OF RILA NATIONAL PARK.

Developers claim to "improve" the area with a well-organized system of ski slopes, which includes Panichishte – Rila Lakes – Kabul Peak. The slopes will be in the location of the Seven Rila Lakes and will include more than 21 ski slopes and facilities on a total area of 240 hectares, two-thirds (160 hectares) of which are inside the National Park boundaries.

(Skiing in Bulgaria is relatively cheap compared with other places around the world. A day Skiing can cost somewhere around the 100 Lev- if you know where to go- That’s about US$ 80 dollars per day, with equipment and everything. In the States, some places charge up to US$ 200 dollars per day plus equipment- see the difference? Good business for skiing resorts, but a bad deal for the environment. The scandalous part is that complete areas in natural reserves are being torn down for the business without thinking about the environmental consequences in the long term)

The investor is “Rila Sport,” a joint-stock company 99 % owned by Realstone Trade Business Corporation registered on the Virgin Islands, UK. The project is kindly supported by the mayor and administration of Sapareva Banya municipality. It sold portions of land for the project to “Rila Sport” under suspicious terms.

In addition to “Super Panichishte,” there are also plans to build “Super Borovets” by "Rila Samokov 2004," a joint-stock company – also owned by foreign investors. Another project includes "Iskrovete," allegedly linked to the businessman Hristo Kovachki. According to local people, the ski resorts in the area of Samokov have been completely distributed among economic groups, political parties and leading businessmen.

An apparent calm before the storm of development lasted about a year, providing developers an opportunity to restructure in face of heightened environmental pressure. While environmentalists battled for NATURA 2000 and sought alternatives to ski resorts projects, a flurry of illegal construction was planned in the Rila Area. Although, the Rila National Parks achieved international acclaim for its efforts to promote wilderness and sustainability, the local and national authorities did not seem to care.

Preserve the world’s natural ecosystems; care for natural reserves, and learn to manage properly natural resources is a responsibility of all of us. Stand up to any kind of abusive practices that threaten our only home: the earth.

Nunca he visto algo parecido.

No he dejado de escucharla. Musica fresca, con ritmo y groove. Es la onda perfecta.

Sofia Film-Festival- de Cine Sofia

( for a complete list of film screenings and locations, click on the title)

The Film fever has come to Bulgaria. The Sofia Film Festival from the 14th to the 25th of March will gather independent filmmakers from eastern and western Europe.

There is a huge selection of venues throughout Bulgaria and Sofia where movie goers can experience what the festival has to offer.

I have never seen a Bulgarian Movie. But there is always a first time. Base on a true story, Voice Over (2010), is story set in the end of the 70's. Anton, a Director of Photography, and his wife Diana are separated by the Iron Curtain- she fled with their son Antoan to Western Berlin while he stayed in Bulgaria. There comes a time, though, when Anton's influential friends fall from power and he loses everything that he's ever loved- his work, his wife and his son. Sounds good.

Also from Korea, dream ( 2008) is a story about Jin, who discovers that when he dreams, the woman that he has never met before, Ran, unconsciously acts out his dream while sleepwalking. For some reason I can't stop thinking of Will Ferrell’s Stranger than Fiction (2006), where ( according to wikipedia) Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service, living his entire life based on the timing of his wristwatch. He is given the job to audit an intentionally tax-delinquent baker, Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) to whom he is awkwardly attracted. On the same day, he begins hearing the voice of a woman that is omnisciently narrating the events in his life, but he is unable to communicate with the voice. On his way home, Harold's watch stops working and he resets it using the time given by a bystander; the voice narrates "little did he know that this simple, seemingly innocuous act would result in his imminent death". Worried over this prediction, Harold turns to a psychiatrist who attributes the voice to schizophrenia. Harold listens to her conclusion without giving importance to it. When he asks what she would advise if it were not schizophrenia, the psychiatrist suggests Harold turn to a literary expert. Harold visits Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), a university professor, and relates his story. Jules first comes to the same conclusion as the psychiatrist, as Harold's dull life is not something commonly seen in novels. However, Jules then recognizes aspects of a literary work in Harold's story ("little did he know"), and encourages him to help identify the author, first by determining if the work is a comedy or a tragedy. Sounds familiar?.

You can find the complete list of screenings venues and all the information relevant to the festival on their website, www.siff.com.

Here's what the Sofia film festival is all about:

Nunca he visto una película búlgara. Suena bien, no?.

Vagabond- art(e) and(y) artist(a)s, i(e)n Sofia

(to view full article, click on the title)

I found this interesting, somewhat honest article about the art scene in Sofia in Bagabond.com , a Bulgarian online magazine in English. Enjoy.

From exhibitions and art galleries to drawing lessons, Sofia has a lot to offer - if you know where to look

Issue 41-42, February-March 2010
by Alexandra Brazitsova

In Central Sofia, easily negotiable on foot, you can find some of the most important state institutions where you can get to know Bulgarian culture. The National Art Gallery and Sofia City Art Gallery boast large collections of Bulgarian art. The National Opera and Ballet and the Bulgaria Hall will surprise you because, despite their neglected interiors, they attract world-class artists and the tickets are considerably cheaper than anywhere in the West. In recent years, you have also had a greater chance of catching a world famous pop star live: the musical highlight of summer 2010 is set to be the concert of Sir Elton John. You can buy a ticket for it online from web sites that have an English version too. The ones we recommend are www. ticketpro.bg, www. ticketstream.bg and www.eventim.bg.

You'll encounter the fewest problems with cinema. The only films which are normally dubbed into Bulgaria are cartoons. All others have subtitles and so the language barrier is non-existent. The capital city has several multiplexes with popcorn munching viewers and sound systems cranked up to the max, but the range of films available elsewhere is quite diverse. Art-house movies are on the programme of Dom na Kinoto (37 Exarch Yosif St), the Odeon (1 Patriarch Evtimiy Blvd) and the cinema hall of the Euro-Bulgarian Cultural Centre (17 Alexander Stamboliyski Blvd). If you want to see a variety of titles from around the world, don't miss Cinemania in November and the Sofia Film Fest in February.

Sofia also has many schools and courses where you can make art your hobby. There is an abundance of choice if you want to study painting, singing and dancing, including ballet classes for adults. Even if you have never thought of yourself as a budding Rembrandt, it is always worth trying.

"What matters is to have a dream and not be afraid to try your hand!" says Gabriela Kozhuharova, owner of the Impresia Art and Hobby Club. There they teach painting, doll making and ceramic art to enthusiasts of all ages. The main idea of Impresia is to help you relax and de-stress through the medium of art. For adults, there are evening classes with another relaxing element besides art: a glass of red wine. Children's classes are held during the week and at weekends and for those who share their hobby with their whole family, there are family studios. Impresia also offers courses in English.

For those who prefer art objects by professional artists, Zona Urbana offers unusual and unique presents – a handbag, a purse or a lamp made of recycled rubber, newspapers and cardboard. The choice is even more difficult when we add the great range of leather bracelets. Do have a look at the extraordinary toys for grown-ups – you may recognise yourself in one of them.

Collectors can indulge their passion in Sofia's art galleries. Prices are relatively low and the quality of the works of art is so good that many foreigners who arrive in the capital leave with a painting, a piece of sculpture or a print. If you are among them, don't forget to ask the art gallery for the necessary documents so that you can take your purchase out of Bulgaria legally. Don't worry about bureaucratic procedures: it is the seller's duty to arrange them all.

At the Creative Art Gallery they have even moved a step further. They deliver everything to your doorstep and if you want to take your purchase outside Bulgaria, just ask the gallery for the documents. The gallery is entirely virtual, which means that you can choose and order an icon, a picture or something else without having to look for a street address. If you are after something specific that you can't find on the web site, don't hesitate to contact the gallery. Creative gives you the chance to order an icon that will be crafted entirely to your taste. Don't worry about the security of your personal data. Creative is among the few online art galleries that will not ask you about your mother's maiden name before the delivery is made.

The Pretty Things Store's workshop makes one-of-a-kind art dolls and, for those who know exactly what they want their doll to look like, there are also custom-made art dolls. Combining different clean and natural materials, the shop assistants will help your child pick a unique doll or toy. Visit the website of the workshop to view the diversity of colours and shapes and get great ideas for your next present.

Due to the global economic crisis many art galleries and art shops have been operating under constant strain. Most of them work not to make a profit, but just to cover their overheads. Yet, there are exceptions. How do they do it? With hard work, loyalty, high quality and a wide choice of goods on offer – like the Ptitsa, or The Bird, shop and art gallery, which opened five years ago.

The two premises look like the art equivalent of Aladdin's cave. They contain works by dozens of talented Bulgarian ceramists and painters: jewellery, vases, cups and so on. We are certain that Ptitsa will become a place you visit regularly, so don't forget to avail of their special loyalty discount card. Ptitsa will soon start online sales too.

Art auctions have also been doing well in these years of economic woes. For Bulgaria, this is a relatively new area. The first professional auction houses appeared only at the end of the 1990s but despite this, the events quickly became popular. Auctions are usually held in the larger hotels, such as the Grand Hotel Sofia and the Sheraton and the hotels of the Dedeman chain in Sofia and Plovdiv. Foreigners attend these auctions regularly, their greatest interest being Bulgarian painters from the beginning and the middle of the 20th Century. The most popular names are Vladimir "Master" Dimitrov, Vasil Stoilov and Nikola Tanev. Such interest is easy to explain: all three of them developed a specific style that incorporated elements of Bulgarian national culture.

Experts claim, however, that this is the time to go after younger, lesser known artists who will be the stars on the local stage in a few years time. Could there be anything more rewarding for a collector?

(click on title for baba marta Facebook group)

I have never written a blog before, although I spend more hours plug to the internet than I care to admit. I am a college student, it is part of it, I guess. A movie is to blame for this impulse:

Julie & Julia (2009). More info here, if you are interested (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_&_Julia.

It is the perfect movie to watch Sunday evening, by the way.

Maybe it was the fact that the story was set in New York,in Queens, where I lived for a while long before coming to Bulgaria. Maybe it was that I am studying Journalism here and I want to learn to write, and tell stories. Perhaps it was the epiphany I had while joking about it during dinner? I am not sure. All I know is that I am here; I’ve got the time? well, not really. Am I the only Colombian living and studying -full time- in Blagoevgrad? Oh! Yes, that maybe it. Well, not really. A bit of everything I guess.

I don’t have a deadline to meet; after all, this will be my blog. I can write whatever I want as long as I comply with copyright laws, respect my family, friends, and pretty much everyone and everything I know. No much room for non-creative writing, right?. So yes, here I am! Internet world!! Another dude taking his 15 mega bites of fame. Seriously.

Today, March 1st, 2010, I start my Bulgarian Blog. Chestita baba marta by the way. What is it? A tradition I am told. What is it about? Wearing Red and white bracelets during all March and the hug them on a tree; Very cute.

I can’t explain better what baba marta is. So, let’s leave BABA MARTA facebook group explain it to you:

"Dear friends, In Bulgaria the month of March is personified as BABA MARTA - Grandmother March, an old woman, whose unpredictable temper is as changeable as the March weather? When she's in a good mood, the sun shines. But if she is mad, watch out for snowstorms.
The first of March is a special festival day on which people wish each other "Chestita Baba Marta!" and give each-other martenitzas, small tassels from white and red wool, for health and good luck.
People wear the tassels and decorate their homes, fruit trees, and even pets with them. Special songs are sung, and houses get a through spring-cleaning to keep Baba Marta in a good mood in case she drops by!

One legend says one of the first Bulgarian Kings sent a message to his beloved wife for a successful battle. The letter was tied with a white threat on a dove's leg. But flying above the enemies' army, the dove was wounded; the red blood colored the threat. Receiving the letter, the Queen was terrified. But on the 1st of March her brave husband, the King, triumphantly came back with his army. The couple was happy, the entire kingdom feasted.
The 1st of March became in our folk tradition forever! So… CHESTITA BABA MARTA! Health & Love for You!"

So, yes, baba marta, like St valentine’s day Bulgarian version, or something. Nice.

I am not sure for how long and what I will write here, but if you read, I thank you in advance.

I am still deciding if I write in English or Spanish. I love my mother tongue, but English writing skills are what I need to work on right now. Forgive me beforehand if you find some grammar mistakes along the way. I will do my best to avoid awkwardness, if such a thing is possible in a blog.

No estoy seguro.
