In Central Sofia, easily negotiable on foot, you can find some of the most important state institutions where you can get to know Bulgarian culture. The National Art Gallery and Sofia City Art Gallery boast large collections of Bulgarian art. The National Opera and Ballet and the Bulgaria Hall will surprise you because, despite their neglected interiors, they attract world-class artists and the tickets are considerably cheaper than anywhere in the West. In recent years, you have also had a greater chance of catching a world famous pop star live: the musical highlight of summer 2010 is set to be the concert of Sir Elton John. You can buy a ticket for it online from web sites that have an English version too. The ones we recommend are www. ticketpro.bg, www. ticketstream.bg and www.eventim.bg.

You'll encounter the fewest problems with cinema. The only films which are normally dubbed into Bulgaria are cartoons. All others have subtitles and so the language barrier is non-existent. The capital city has several multiplexes with popcorn munching viewers and sound systems cranked up to the max, but the range of films available elsewhere is quite diverse. Art-house movies are on the programme of Dom na Kinoto (37 Exarch Yosif St), the Odeon (1 Patriarch Evtimiy Blvd) and the cinema hall of the Euro-Bulgarian Cultural Centre (17 Alexander Stamboliyski Blvd). If you want to see a variety of titles from around the world, don't miss Cinemania in November and the Sofia Film Fest in February.

Sofia also has many schools and courses where you can make art your hobby. There is an abundance of choice if you want to study painting, singing and dancing, including ballet classes for adults. Even if you have never thought of yourself as a budding Rembrandt, it is always worth trying.

"What matters is to have a dream and not be afraid to try your hand!" says Gabriela Kozhuharova, owner of the Impresia Art and Hobby Club. There they teach painting, doll making and ceramic art to enthusiasts of all ages. The main idea of Impresia is to help you relax and de-stress through the medium of art. For adults, there are evening classes with another relaxing element besides art: a glass of red wine. Children's classes are held during the week and at weekends and for those who share their hobby with their whole family, there are family studios. Impresia also offers courses in English.

For those who prefer art objects by professional artists, Zona Urbana offers unusual and unique presents – a handbag, a purse or a lamp made of recycled rubber, newspapers and cardboard. The choice is even more difficult when we add the great range of leather bracelets. Do have a look at the extraordinary toys for grown-ups – you may recognise yourself in one of them.

Collectors can indulge their passion in Sofia's art galleries. Prices are relatively low and the quality of the works of art is so good that many foreigners who arrive in the capital leave with a painting, a piece of sculpture or a print. If you are among them, don't forget to ask the art gallery for the necessary documents so that you can take your purchase out of Bulgaria legally. Don't worry about bureaucratic procedures: it is the seller's duty to arrange them all.

At the Creative Art Gallery they have even moved a step further. They deliver everything to your doorstep and if you want to take your purchase outside Bulgaria, just ask the gallery for the documents. The gallery is entirely virtual, which means that you can choose and order an icon, a picture or something else without having to look for a street address. Due to the global economic crisis many art galleries and art shops have been operating under constant strain. Most of them work not to make a profit, but just to cover their overheads. Yet, there are exceptions. How do they do it? Art auctions have also been doing well in these years of economic woes. For Bulgaria, this is a relatively new area. The first professional auction houses appeared only at the end of the 1990s but despite this, the events quickly became popular. Auctions are usually held in the larger hotels, such as the Grand Hotel Sofia and the Sheraton and the hotels of the Dedeman chain in Sofia and Plovdiv. Foreigners attend these auctions regularly, their greatest interest being Bulgarian painters from the beginning and the middle of the 20th Century. The most popular names are Vladimir "Master" Dimitrov, Vasil Stoilov and Nikola Tanev. Such interest is easy to explain: all three of them developed a specific style that incorporated elements of Bulgarian national culture.

Experts claim, however, that this is the time to go after younger, lesser known artists who will be the stars on the local stage in a few years time. Could there be anything more rewarding for a collector?
